MC: PAT KIERNAN

Pat Kiernan photo Pat Kiernan is a New York-based journalist and television program host. He’s best known to New Yorkers as part of their morning routine. As the anchor of Time Warner’s 24-hour cable news service, “NY1 News” he’s developed fan base that runs the spectrum from taxi drivers to rock stars. He’s known to viewers across the United State for his work as a game show host, most recently on VH1’s “World Series of Pop Culture.”

Pat delivers a particular brand of “smart” reporting that defies television’s conventional pursuit of the lowest common denominator. He’s particularly interested in business news – and put that knowledge to good use for four years when he led CNN’s “Money Gang” program. He has been a contributor to Canada’s Business News Network since its inception as “Report on Business Television.”

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Pat was fascinated with radio and television at a young age. When local radio stations would broadcast live from location, Pat would beg his father to take him so he could meet the on-air personality. In high school, Pat and a few friends started a radio station over the intercom.

Pat attended the University of Alberta, receiving a Bachelor of Commerce degree. His volunteer work at the campus radio station landed him the job of reporting the afternoon newscast, which led to a part-time job at an Edmonton FM station during his last two years of school. After college, Pat’s career in television began when the local CTV network station recruited him from its sister radio station.

In 1996, Pat moved from Edmonton to New York to take a job with Time Warner. He was well-liked and recruited to the company’s NY1 News operation as the station’s business news anchor. Less than a year later, Pat was promoted to his current position as NY1’s morning anchor.

Time Out NY magazine recently named Pat one of its “40 Favorite New Yorkers.” The New York Times says “Kiernan has a deadpan gift to rival Greg Kinnear’s, but he has heart too.” The Beastie Boys’ Adam Horowitz told the New York Post that he and his girlfriend might someday show up at NY1 with signs that say “We love you, Pat!”

Pat was the only local television newscaster included in Columbia Journalism Review’s list of the New Yorkers who shape national media coverage. New York magazine called him the “media junkie’s morning addiction.”

Pat lives in New York with his wife and two children.
